We had been looking at rings for a few weeks and I decided I was done looking and wanted to leave it up to him. So, I thought he would take his time to pick the right one and pricing wise it would take a month or so. To my surprise only a week after I had told him it was in his hands he decided to buy it and to pop the question. (He just couldn't wait any longer ;)...that's what I like to think anyway).
December 10, 2009. Well, he showed up to my house as a surprise right when I got off work. Hint #1 he cut his hair...we then went inside and he said "lets go to dinner..but first lets go look at Christmas lights and walk around." Hint #2 walk around in the bitter cold looking at lights. haha.
So we went up to the "island" of logan where all the amazing houses are. We hopped out of the car and I said "i'm cold" he said " I have something that will take care of that" he then pulled out a perfectly wrapped christmas gift for me. It was a big brown blanket with my name stitched into it that he made all by himself! I wrapped that around me and we walked up a small hill. At the top of the hill we found a huge nativity scene. When we got there I said "my ears are cold" ...poor Jake can never make this girl happy enough hahaha...what a baby I am. So, he smiled and threw the blanket over my head (haha so Jake) and gave me a big squeeze..haha. As he was hugging me I could feel him fidgeting with something in his pocket...I thought..."no way! is he really going for it tonight!! he has the ring!?"
He let go of me and I took the blanket off and he was kneeling all teary eyed and said "Brooke will you marry me?" I smiled so big and said "yes"
SO simple...I was SO happy and felt a huge release! The commitment was made! I so love him.
Jake made the blanket with more in mind. He wants to next stitch his name on it next. Then as we have kids we'll put each of their names on it as well. It will be our Christmas blanket :)

Education
"For members of the Church, education is not merely a good idea—it's a commandment. We are to learn 'of things both in heaven and in the earth, and under the earth; things which have been, things which are, things which must shortly come to pass; things which are at home, things which are abroad' (see D&C 88:79–80)."
Dieter F. Uchtdorf, "Two Principles for Any Economy," Ensign, Nov. 2009, 58
"Throughout the ages, many have obtained guidance helpful to resolve challenges in their lives by following the example of respected individuals who resolved similar problems. Today, world conditions change so rapidly that such a course of action is often not available to us."Personally, I rejoice in that reality because it creates a condition where we, of necessity, are more dependent upon the Spirit to guide us through the vicissitudes of life. Therefore, we are led to seek personal inspiration in life's important decisions."

“There are cycles of good and bad times, ups and downs, periods of joy and sadness, and times of plenty as well as scarcity. When our lives turn in an unanticipated and undesirable direction, sometimes we experience stress and anxiety. One of the challenges of this mortal experience is to not allow the stresses and strains of life to get the better of us—to endure the varied seasons of life while remaining positive, even optimistic. Perhaps when difficulties and challenges strike, we should have these hopeful words of Robert Browning etched in our minds: 'The best is yet to be'.”

October 15, 2008. My first night back from Chile. My sisters Michele and Kelly slept in my room with me for the first night. I was exhausted...I slept with my nylons on even. I slept on the top bunk while Michele and Kelly slept below me.
In the middle of the night, I sit up, peer over the side of my bed and start going off in spanish...the fastest Chilean spanish you'll ever hear. Michele sits up confused at why I'm shouting at her...she quietly says "you want the fan on? I know I should understand what you're saying...you want the fan on?"
I then wake up and we laugh for 15 minutes straight.
I had been dreaming that the sisters in my mission were being disobedient and I was in charge of all 30 of them. I was yelling at them to take their luggage and put it where they were supposed to at the airport. hahaha...so michele got a spanish mouthful the first night back....it was hilarious.
TIE-FO! TIE-FO!
Fall 2006...Hillside Apartments...rooming with Colleen Darley from Simi Valley California. I was in the process of getting my medical examinations finished for my Mission Papers. That day I had gotten my Typhoid Shot.
In the middle of the night Colleen was asleep (and so was I) I'm standing over her bed looking down at her (I know! freaky!) I then begin digging in her sheets looking for "Tie-fo" the little boy that was lost and needed my help. Colleen wakes up with complete terror to find some shadow peering down at her...probably centimeters away from her face...she grabs her blanket and gasps "UGHHHH!!" I then wake up and we laugh for years about it.
Tie-fo the little boy was safe :) I had been so stressed about getting my typhoid shots haha
The funny thing is two years later in Huelen Chile the same dream came to me...I was searching through my companions sheets for a little chilean boy who needed my help and was getting squished. My companion just grunted at me and I woke up hahaha...what a nut I am!
Colleen, I'm sure will never forget that one :D Love ya!
Another night in the same apartment with the same roommate I woke myself up frantically looking for the piece of cake I apparently had stashed away...I said to myself in my sleep ...
"Where did I put it? ...Ah Shoot!!" I then began shoveling at my bed sheets in the corner where the wall was and as I'm shoveling trying to find the cake that had to have been getting smashed in that corner ...I wake myself up...start laughing..then fall back onto my pillow.
True Story. (Christa saw that one too)
Sleeping Episode #2 : Red Iguana
Well...once again I'm in the same room in Cobble Creek apartments with Christa my roommate...this one I vividly remember.
So..all I remember is sitting up, picking up my cell phone opening it up to get some light to shine on Christa's bed to see if she's home yet. After failing to focus and adjust my eyes to the dark I suddenly throw my back to the wall behind me...squeezing my legs in as tight to my chest as possible, trying to hold as still as I could against the wall (it felt like frank on "Emporers New Groove" where he freezes like a statue humming his own theme music)...because a huge red iguana is climbing up the side of my bed and I'm hoping it won't see me in the dark...
hahaha...like all the other sleeping episodes I have...I woke up..realized there was no red iguana and that I was again dreaming it all.
The funny thing is that Christa saw the whole thing....she woke up to me shining my bright cell phone light in her face and watched as I spasmed and pressed myself against the wall..she was freaked out but when she saw that I woke from it..she relaxed.
Okay folks...here's the first of the crazy dreams I've had since home from my mission...along with these dreams comes actions, speaking, yelling, going off in spanish etc...amusing for those watching (mostly for my roommate Christa)
So this one is title "ARE YOU LAUGHING AT ME?"
There I was, 10:30 at night, deliriously sleeping in our shared bedroom at Cobble creek apartments in Logan. Christa walks in the room...(prior to this event I had had several other sleeping episodes and I knew I had because Christa told me all about them). So Christa walks in the room as I'm unconciously sleeping. I sit up and say in a panic "is it tomorrow yet? is it tomorrow?" To which Christa replys "nope" she then starts laughing because I poke my head through the blinds to see if it was tomorrow yet. She laughs, I then say in an astonished voice "are you LAUGHING at me!?!" She then says "I can't wait to tell you about this tomorrow" to which I reply "NO, no, no...you think I'm sleeping don't you?" I then fall back on my pillow and continue sleeping. haha

((LaUgH iT oFf..))
I remember a time on my mission, in my 4th area, Colina (Esmerelda). I was unusually stressed/tired and I got tired of being that way...missionaries are supposed to be the happiest, I thought to myself. However, I didn't feel that way at the time. One morning I woke up and was determined to change how I was feeling. I decided to laugh instead of get angry, laugh instead of get frustrated, laugh instead of getting anxious, etc. Sooo...my companion and I got ready for our day and left the house..we had a gated house like everyone does in Chile and it was locked. We closed the house door behind us and got to the gate outside. My companion had the keys at the time...haha when we got to the gate I waited for Hermana Quispe to unlock it...she looked up at me with disbelief on her face. Yep, she locked the keys in the house. Luckily I had decided to laugh things off...so I did. We were locked out from the house and locked in from the outside world haha..the gates were very very tall and had spikes at the top of them. The only way out was to bother the Elders to come free us...or climb the fence. Sooo, we climbed the fence! I boosted Sister Quispe (5 foot nothin') up on my shoulders she carefully climbed over the fence into the neighbors yard...she was saying "oh dear...oh my...pardon me...pardon me" the whole time she scurried around on my shoulders...it made me laugh even harder.
Laughing...made that memory a great one! We even have pictures of it... It was kind of mean of me to leave her hanging there while I got this picture haha...It turned a time consuming accident into a funny memory. I learned a great life lesson that day. Just Laugh It Off.
(LaUgH iT oFf.. a happier way to life)
Getting lost was not an unusual occurrence for us. Once while heading south to Cedar City, Utah, we took a wrong turn and didn’t realize it until two hours later when we saw the “Welcome to Nevada” signs. We didn’t get angry. We laughed, and as a result, anger and resentment rarely resulted. Our laughter created cherished memories for us.
I remember when one of our daughters went on a blind date. She was all dressed up and waiting for her date to arrive when the doorbell rang. In walked a man who seemed a little old, but she tried to be polite. She introduced him to me and my wife and the other children; then she put on her coat and went out the door. We watched as she got into the car, but the car didn’t move. Eventually our daughter got out of the car and, red faced, ran back into the house. The man that she thought was her blind date had actually come to pick up another of our daughters who had agreed to be a babysitter for him and his wife.
We all had a good laugh over that. In fact, we couldn’t stop laughing. Later, when our daughter’s real blind date showed up, I couldn’t come out to meet him because I was still in the kitchen laughing. Now, I realize that our daughter could have felt humiliated and embarrassed. But she laughed with us, and as a result, we still laugh about it today.
The next time you’re tempted to groan, you might try to laugh instead. It will extend your life and make the lives of all those around you more enjoyable." -Elder Wirthlin (Conference Talk "Come What May and Love It")

Today, on the Aggie Shuttle ride up to campus a song came on the radio that immediately impressed the old man bus driver to remove his baseball hat he was wearing and place it to his chest over the heart. The sound of this nations anthem provoked a loyalty and patriotism from that man to this countries name. His respect reminded me of the great nation this is. I love to see Americans proud to uphold our countries honor. Thanks old man and God Bless America!

As I look at my mission pictures and the areas I served in, the people I met, the companion I had at the time, I can't help but think about the feelings I had during that specific time. I remember feeling completely inadequate and weak most of the time. I had the feeling often but comfort came as I prayed for strength and courage to just do my best.
Looking at pictures of Renca (my first area) the feeling that comes to me right now is laughter but I remember feeling then at that time confusion, panic, anxiety, loneliness, humility and gratitude. I remember relying SO much on the Lord at that time.
Looking at pictures of Quilicura (second area) I remember feeling determination, excitement, discouragement, joy, some pride, gratitude and capacity to do hard things.
Pictures of Los Andes brings back feelings of excitement, happiness, determination, hard work, beauty, comfort, home, guidance, inadequacy, trust laughter and fun.
Colina pictures bring back feelings of endurance, happiness, exhaustion, hard work, hope, enjoyment.
And finally, Huelen...frustration, hilariousness, capability, incapability, assurance, pride, light heartedness, joy, hard work, stress, maturity, leadership, fun, happy, excitement.
Good times! I have so many small flashbacks to being in Chile. Certain streets, companionships, Favorite food stops, favorite lessons, funny street contacts.
I loved it...the good, the bad, the hard, the stress, the joy, the service.

How time has flown! A year ago today I spent my last few hours in Santiago Chile where I served for a year and a half as a Missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Every day this past year I have thought of someone I met while serving.
I remember Dionisio and his big smile an older gentleman who had been baptised 20 years prior to when we knocked on his door. He was so excited to get back to church.
I remember the Sanchez Family we met New Years Day 2008. They were baptised and the parents received callings quickly.
I remember the Salvatierra Family and their humble home out in the country and how much they loved to have us there.
Ignacio a little 8 year old who was the second baptism I ever saw while on my mission and how he LOVED to sing hymns.
Patricia Dinamarca, the first baptism I witnessed as a new missionary. She was a middle aged woman who embraced tightly the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

SISTERS
I am Brooke (Shnook) and these are my beautiful sisters. My older sister's name is MICHELE (mousy) and she is a doll-face. Anyone who meets Michele instantly loves her. She's the funniest/quirkiest girl you'll ever meet. She rubs fuzzy quilt ties through her fingers to relax. She's pregnant right now with a baby boy and is the most darling of all pregnant ladies. She's my girl. Then comes KELLY (chum). What a firecracker she turned out to be. By firecracker I mean...incredibly good-looking. Kelly is awesome. She has out-awesomeized her two older sisters by a landslide. She plays the guitar like a champion and speaks spanish like a latina. BRANDI! (Brandies or Muncher) In one word...Beautiful! Brandi has the BEST laugh! I LOVE to hear her laugh at something stupid i've done. One time I was driving her to school and intentionally drove around the round-about like 3 times in the middle of her school just to keep her laughing! RACHEL (sunshine) She is beautiful also...in fact all of my sisters look completely different but they are all B_E_A_U_T_I_F_U_L! Rachel is Such a SWEETHEART. You'll never see Rachel be rude or sharp with anyone intentionally. I love how sweet and pure she is. Here comes MIRANDA (Bambino or Manda-rie) she's another Firecracker/Fireball. She is my little dancer! I've never seen a little 9 year old dance so dang good. She was dancing like a champion since she was a toddler. She moves those hips like it's no ones business. And finally MIKAYLA (Kayla-rae)she's 7 now! Kayla has the most beautiful eyes!! BIG and DARK! Kayla is the baby. She gives me hugs all the time. She's a sweetheart as well. Her and Miranda are best buds..just like Michele and I.

Flip-flops have been around for centuries, some 15,000 years! Many believe they originated from ancient China or Egypt. Flip-flop looking shoes are seen in ancient Egyptian rock paintings called hieroglyphics that date back to around 4,000 B.C.
However, we would never hear ancient Egyptians refer to their sandals as "flip-flops." The term flip-flop is a term that has been used since the 1960's, for sandals that have no heel strap or back. The shoe began to be referred to as the "flip-flop" because of the sound it would make as you walk. Flip-flops are popular in warmer climates, which is why they are great for sunny California. The culture you find in my hometown of Ventura California, has a laid back culture where you will find yourself surrounded by surfers, long-boarders and beach-goers who happen to ALL be wearing flip-flop.
"Flip-flops came to represent the California lifestyle in general and surf culture in particular" said a beachwear company found at www.pecheblu.com/history. This website for beachwear also tells us of more flip-flop history "A large push of the conversion of flip flops into everyday life came from Havaianas, the major Brazilian producer. For over three decades, Havaianas were $3 Brazilian flip-flops of synthetic rubber that were the footwear of Sao Paulo peasants, housekeepers, dockworkers and other poor people."
So, if you plan on visiting Cali anytime soon, especially Southern California, don't sweat it...just throw on some FLIP-FLOPS and you'll be living it up California style.

LA CAZUELA
This is your typical chilean meal! It was pretty tasty!
They love eating pumpkin out there. My companion
Hermana Quispe hated it...so I always ended eating
double. Blame it on her for the 15 pounds I gained.

SOPAIPILLAS
This is a common breakfast. It's like a scone!
They eat it with mustard...but I ate it with SUGAR!
They thought it was the strangest thing ever. haha.

LA UVA
Hermana Hogan actually came up with this idea.
I like it. It was an experience I'll never forget being
inside a vineyard looking for miles at the vines.

EL TEMPLO
This is a picture I really like. I kind of
want to see it in black and white.
But It has a shot of the Santiago Chile
Temple. A place i came to love greatly.
The badge is the purpose I came to love.

ESMERALDA
I'd say Colina did too. Check out that orange!
We left a lesson and looked up and had to stop.

LA CALLE POH
This was taken near finishing my mission.
Its the first street I ever walked in Chile.
I remember wondering why they cut their trees
so hideously. But I love it. Isn't it awesome!

LOS ZAPATOS DE UNA MISIONERA
The shoes of a missionary. I went through about
a dozen pairs on the mish. No I didn't wear the flip-flops
out tracting...just to church ;)

BARBARITA
This girl was such a character. She loved my
companion, and sort of, kind of liked me..haha
this is a shot of her living conditions. Pretty rough.

PORTILLO
looking at this makes me feel like i shouldn't
be sitting down. I should be getting my water ski's out.

LA PLAZA
This was my favorite place to go in Chile. It was
a place I felt I had seen before in my life.
MENDOZITAThere is no better picture to illustrate her.
She was my funniest companion. You'll
get a better taste of Hermana Mendoza later on.

LA SELVA
This looks like I served in the Jungle or something
but...I didn't. It's just a lush place. Santa Maria.
CHILENAThis is definately one of my favorite shots on the mission.
I love how you can see the true style of Chilean homes.
HOGANI love this of Sister Hogan. I love it
because it's blurry all over. I think it
looks awesome! It was both of our
first times inside a vineyard!
GERALDAThis photo is timeless to me. It
puts me back to visiting her in her little
house and feeling her sweet spirit.
She was baptised at 80 years old!

CURVES
Alright! don't judge me for this one.
This sign says
"Precaution. Zone with Dangerous Curves"
hahaha

P.S. I don't
know why it was making that blue above?
EL CAMPOThis was why it was a dream of a mission.
LOS CHILENOSIf you want to know what Chilean Men look like..
here it is. They were a bunch of taxi drivers.
Chileans love to get their picture taken.
in this shot. It would have been
cool to see all the Chileans behind me.
EL SOL DE LOS ANDESLos Andes Sunset I like the chilean biker in this
shot. I didn't realize it till today.
LAS CHIQUILLASThis is a famous photo of the sisters in my mission.
I've got some hops and didn't even know it.

This is a VERY special photo of mine. I took this photo on September 14th, 2008. It was taken right as I arrived to the Santiago Airport at the closing of my mission. Before arriving, on that long drive in the back of the mission van, I had been praying to ask Heavenly Father if I had completed what He had hoped of me the past year and a half. I sincerely wanted to know if He was pleased with my service as His missionary. As I stepped foot out of the mission van I looked up to see this beautiful cloud in the sunset. As you can see it's a heart with sun rays bursting out of it. As I looked at it I felt a sweet, peaceful feeling come over me. I felt this was Heavenly Father's way of showing me his love and approval for my missionary service there in Chile. Moments later the cloud dispersed and I went home feeling grateful.
